"Free World: The Logic of US Leadership?"
This presentation explores the origins and impact of the "free world" concept that shaped U.S. foreign policy in the mid-20th century. Initially coined in the 1940s, the term quickly became accepted by Americans as a given reality, facilitating significant policy transformations under its banner. Key issues include the equation of the "free world" with all non-communist countries, leading to rigid policies such as global containment, intolerance of nonalignment, and an inability to articulate a positive foreign policy ideology. While the "free world" framework was somewhat relaxed after the 1960s, its legacy and occasional revival still influence U.S. foreign policy today.
