The World's Flashpoints: Building a United Effort for Humanitarian Action

大卫·米利班德:聚焦全球热点:携手推进人道主义行动

Humanitarian action to save lives in the midst of conflict and disaster is more necessary than ever, with 300 million people around the world in humanitarian need.  This should be an important area of global cooperation, but the gap between needs and response is growing.  This lecture will address both the needs, and why they are rising, and the global response, and why it is falling short. Drawing on insights from the International Rescue Committee’s 2025 Emergency Watchlist, the lecture will present the data on humanitarian needs in places like Sudan and Syria, describe the drivers of humanitarian need over the last decade, and set out some of the necessary efforts for the current trends to be reversed.  The lecture will set out the case for strengthening cooperation, scaling evidence-based interventions, and building political consensus, so that humanitarian efforts can alleviate suffering, support the most vulnerable, and address challenges that transcend borders.

David Miliband

David Miliband has in the last several years become a global humanitarian leader after a fifteen-year career at the top of UK politics. He is a global authority on international affairs, having been the youngest UK Foreign Secretary in thirty years from 2007-2010. He also served as Member of Parliament for South Shields, Secretary for Environment, Minister of State for Schools, Co-Chair of the Global Ocean Commission, and head of the Prime Minister’s Policy Unit. In 2011 he undertook teaching and lecturing at MIT and Stanford University, and in 2012 was a Fischer Fellow at the Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University. David currently works as President & CEO of the International Rescue Committee, one of the world’s leading humanitarian and refugee aid organizations.
