Daniel Russel: Building the World We Want to Live In
We are experiencing a time of dramatic global change, as the world confronts pressing challenges—from climate change and technological disruption to economic uncertainty and geopolitical tension. The future will be shaped not only by governments, but also by the aspirations and actions of individuals. The world we live in tomorrow will reflect the choices we each make today. There’s a saying: without a map, we can easily lose our way. In uncertain times, it’s all the more important to ask ourselves what kind of world we want to live in—and to let that vision shape our path forward. Drawing on his experience as an American diplomat, this speech will reflect on moments in U.S.-China relations when vision, humility, and principled compromise opened doors that hostility had closed. It will explore how two great nations—and their peoples—have managed tensions in the past, and how they might navigate differences in the future to contribute to a more stable and constructive global environment.
