Ole Wæver: Three-Dimensional Geopolitics: Great Power Rivalry, Planetary Dangers and Post-Colonial Assertiveness

What is the big picture of global politics, and can we even draw one? Three simultaneous dynamics shape global developments, yet they are difficult to think together. The first is a return of great power rivalry. Second is global management of shared dangers like climate change, AI and quantum computing. These two geopolitical dynamics interact, blocking and reinforcing each other. Increasingly, both are conditioned by a third force in world politics: new agendas coming from the ‘Global South’. This talk maps our geopolitical challenges and possibilities in 3D.

Ole Wæver（奥利·维夫）

Ole Wæver is Professor of International Relations at the Department of Political Science, University of Copenhagen and currently Invited Professor at University of Tokyo, Institute of Advanced Studies, Tokyo College. He coined the concept of ‘securitization’ and co-developed what is known as the Copen¬hagen School in security studies. Beyond security theory, his research interests include climate change, conflict analysis and resolu¬tion, the history and sociology of the International Relations discipline, philosophy of science, sociology of science, religion in international affairs, politics of technology, conceptual history, and speech act theory.

In Denmark he has served on numerous policy advising bodies on defense, security, climate and research policy, frequently analyze current affairs in the media, and he is a member of the Royal Danish Aca¬demy of Sciences and Letters. Two of his main books are translated into Chinese: Security: A New Framework for Analysis (co-authored with Barry Buzan and Jaap de Wilde) and Regions and Powers: The Structure of International Security (with Barry Buzan). One of his latest books is Greenland in Arctic Security: (De)securitization Dynamics under Climatic Thaw and Geopolitical Freeze (co-edited with Marc Jacobsen and Ulrik Pram Gad)
